Description

This course will be available after the live event September 2026.

This course was applied for continuing education credit from September 26, 2026 - September 26, 2027, for the state of Kentucky.

All components (video, quiz, affidavit, participation codes, evaluation, etc.) must be completed between September 26, 2026 - September 26, 2027 to count for continuing education credit in Kentucky.

Note: Date of completion will be when you complete the last component - so even if you watch the hours on different days, do NOT complete all of the quizzes on the same day or it will look like you watched all of your hours in 1 day.

Title: Investigating Radiology Errors in Spine and Appendicular Conditions: A Practical Approach for Chiropractors
Speaker: Dr. Beverly Harger, DC, DACBR
CEs: 2 hours
Sponsor:

Course Description and Outline

Chiropractors frequently evaluate musculoskeletal and spine conditions where accurate radiologic interpretation is essential for timely diagnosis and effective management. However, common—and often preventable—radiology errors can lead to missed fractures, delayed recognition of serious pathology, unnecessary imaging, or inappropriate referrals. This 2hour course equips chiropractors with practical tools to recognize common diagnostic pitfalls in imaging of the spine, as well as upper and lower extremity conditions commonly seen. Using real clinical cases, participants will learn how radiology errors occur, how to spot subtle or easily misinterpreted findings, what imaging to order (and when), and how to incorporate redflag assessment into clinical workflows. The course also addresses communication strategies with radiologists, appropriate followup intervals, and how cognitive biases affect both readers and ordering clinicians. Clinicians will leave with improved confidence in interpreting reports, identifying red flags, and coordinating timely care to reduce adverse patient outcomes

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this 2hour course, participants will be able to:

1.     Identify highrisk radiology pitfalls

Recognize at least five commonly missed spine and appendicular injuries in outpatient settings and describe the clinical scenarios in which they are most likely to occur.

2.     Apply appropriate imaging selection

Select the most appropriate imaging modality (Xray, CT, MRI, or ultrasound) for common musculoskeletal and spine presentations based on clinical findings, mechanism of injury, and redflag symptoms.

3.     Interpret radiology reports more effectively

Differentiate between equivocal, indeterminate, and critical report language and determine appropriate next steps, including followup intervals and referrals.

4.     Recognize subtle but clinically significant findings

Identify key subtle radiographic signs that may indicate underlying serious pathology despite normalappearing initial studies.

5.     Mitigate cognitive bias in clinical practice

Explain at least two cognitive biases (e.g., anchoring, satisfaction of search) and implement strategies to reduce their impact on ordering or interpreting imaging.

6.     Improve communication with radiology teams

Formulate clear, clinically useful imaging orders including mechanism, focal findings, and suspected diagnoses to reduce diagnostic ambiguity and radiology errors.

7.     Determine appropriate followup and referral pathways

Establish evidencebased followup timelines for patients with persistent symptoms despite “normal” imaging and identify when urgent referral or escalation is necessary.

Dr. Beverly Harger creates an interactive learning environment that stimulates interest in the role of imaging in patient care. Her programs motivate clinicians to remain up to date on current concepts in clinical imaging. Her imaging presentations are interesting and helpful in providing doctors with practical radiographic and clinical information for their daily practice.

Dr. Harger is a chiropractic radiologist with more than 28 years of clinical experience. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Western States (UWS) in 1987. In 1992, she completed her radiology residency at UWS and attained her diplomate status from the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology. She is a professor and director of the MS in diagnostic imaging. as well as the clinical radiologist for UWS.

Her presentations address the importance of knowing imaging algorithms and understanding when imaging has a role in establishing diagnosis. Utilizing radiology case studies, clinicians will learn to differentiate many common conditions and not-so-common conditions, along with patient history and physical examination.

Dr. Harger holds memberships in the ACA Council on Diagnostic Imaging and the American Chiropractic College of Radiology. She was named the UWS Outstanding Faculty in 2013.
