Course Name: Concussion Evaluation and Management

Course Description: This two-hour course equips Doctors of Chiropractic with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to evaluate and manage sports-related concussion. Emphasizing a chiropractic approach within a multidisciplinary care model, the course covers key topics including return-to-play decision-making, concussion assessment tools, management of cervicogenic concussion, and care considerations for special populations such as adolescent and female athletes. Through case studies and practical instruction, participants will develop confidence in applying evidence-based strategies to support safe and effective concussion recovery.
Learner Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
· Analyze the patient history and physical examination findings to determine if a patient has had a concussion.
· Perform the essential components of a standardized concussion assessment.
· Demonstrate effective evaluation and management strategies for head injuries in sports.
· Identify clinical signs of increased intracranial pressure and dysautonomia.
· Conduct a targeted examination for individuals with suspected concussion.
· Develop management plans for patients presenting with concussion.
· Manage concussion in special populations, including female, children and athletes.
· Synthesize findings from serial examinations to make accurate care decisions.
Course Outline (2.0 Hours)
Hour 1: Foundations of Concussion Management
Introduction to the evaluation and management of sports-related concussion.
Essential components of patient history and examination procedures.
Standardized office based concussion assessments.
Hour 2: Advanced Management and Decision-Making
Determining safe return-to-play clearance.
Cervicogenic components of concussion evaluation.
Corrective exercise strategies for cervicogenic-related concussion.
Dr. Aaron Welk is a 2009 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He went on to complete an additional 4.5 years of Residency and Fellowship training in the Logan University Department of Radiology, earning board certification in Chiropractic Radiology (DACBR) in 2013. With fellowship training in musculoskeletal ultrasound, Dr. Welk enjoys working with athletes and has had the opportunity to work with patients ranging from youth athletes, to weekend warriors, to All-Star professional athletes. In addition to practicing as a Chiropractic Radiologist, he is Adjunct Faculty for the Logan University Department of Radiology.
