The Opioid Crisis:  Addressing Neurotransmitters and Reducing Stress May Be An Answer

 

 

During this presentation you will see the correlation between stress and adrenal disorders as well as neurotransmitter disfunction that commonly leads us down a path of chronic pain, difficulty in recovery and mental challenges.  With the increase in opioid prescriptions it is now more important than ever for chiropractic physicians to have the tools necessary to combat this crisis.  The ability to utilize nutrition and supplementation as well as lifestyle changes can strongly impact outcomes for patients in a way that is healthier and more permanent without the potential for addictive substances.  Understanding the causes for adrenal and neurotransmitter imbalance as well as eliminating triggers will be presented with simple concepts to implement into practice.

1.     Statistics and Research on Opioid use and addiction

2.     How opioids work

3.     What happens with addiction and the relationship to dopamine

4.     How chronic stress will alter adrenal function and neurotransmitter function

5.     The role of infection as a result of stress

6.     The gut, brain, mouth connection

 

Hour  2

1.     Testing

            a. Gut infection

            b. Mouth infection

            c. Adrenal stress

                        i. HPA access

            d. Related labs

2.     Treatment protocols for infection and adrenal stress/fatigue

3.     3. Testing for neurotransmitters

            a. Serotonin, Gaba, dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine

            b. Herbs, vitamins, minerals, amino acids

5.     Case studies

Objectives:

 

The physician will understand the dangers and challenges with prescription opioid use.

The physician will be able to implement basic testing to assess adrenal health, neurotransmitter balance, gut health and nutrient levels to help patients better deal with chronic pain and mental challenges.

They physician will understand the role of stress, infection, lifestyle and neurotransmitter imbalance that they will commonly find in patients that present to their office.

The physician will be able to implement natural and healthier  treatment plans for injuries, pain and other health challenges that might otherwise lead the patient down the path of opioid use.

Dr. Cindy M. Howard is a Board Certified Chiropractic Internist and Nutritionist in private practice in Chicago, Illinois and holds a license in the state of Florida. She speaks Nationally, presenting on topics including Pre and Post Concussion Nutrition, Neuro-adrenal dysfunction and Infection in sport, Male and Female pelvic disorders, Pediatrics, Immunology, GI disorders, Endocrinology, Nutritional Blood analysis interpretation and Genetics. 

She is also the owner of DC consulting and Advance Education  assisting private practices. She loves to help doctors to improve their communication with patients, increase compliance and build a better functional medicine or nutritional practice. 

For the last 8 years she has served as the Illinois delegate for the American Chiropractic society and as the alternate for 6 years prior to that. Serving the ACA she has served on the membership, professional development, guidelines, bylaws and grievance committees. She was the recipient of the Flynn/Lynch award in 2015 for outstanding service. She is also a founding member of the ACA Women’s health council.

She is a past president of the ACA Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders and currently serves as the Vice President of the College of Pharmacology and Toxicology. She also serves on the medical advisory board for the Functional Medicine University, serves as a board member for Before the Hit and is an associate editor of The Original Internist.

Locally Dr. Howard serves as a board member for the Frankfort Falcons Youth football organization, the concussion oversight team for the local school district and is the team chiropractor for Dreamz Elite competitive cheer and the local wrestling club.
